There’s been much rejoicing in the Writers office recently, after we discovered another (highly unexpected) ally in our constant battle for clearer communication.

The UK government, so often a bastion of impenetrable language, has released guidelines for the written communication of all its public sector officials. They’ve been told officially to stop including many of the over-used words we despise.

Could it be that we’re finally heading towards a world where delivering solutions, going forward and impacting become things of the past?

We can only hope. Now that even civil servants have been told these words are opaque or clichés, perhaps more businesses will begin to understand this as well.

You can read the full guidelines here https://www.gov.uk/designprinciples/styleguide (section 1.5).

It’s really rather good.
